Finding a Passion in Law - J'dem Ling Jig Sheng

Updated: May 12, 2022

1. The main reason why I wanted to study Law was the importance it takes in the world. Law builds civilization, protects fundamental rights, and protects ideas and inventions through patenting. Anyone can defend his or her right through the legal system. Law can bind an agreement to allow an aircraft to fly from country A to country B. Law can talk to the public, society, and our nation. This subject enhanced my organizational and presentation skills. Study skills projects provide extensive knowledge in techniques for addressing academic tasks as well as handling large amounts of research information. Sociology develops an understanding of society as a whole and it also revaluates common assumptions that may not be true. First and foremost, I will provide the knowledge that I learned in the law to help others, especially poor people. As they are not affordable to pay the lawyer fee, I will help them to pay it because the law is helping others. Law can talk something in protecting the poor people and the needy. If I don't do that, I realize that our country will become more and more terrible and corrupt. I will do my best to help others if they need me. My idol is Dato' Seri Utama Karpal Singh s/o Ram Singh. He helps others by using his knowledge of law. He did his best in his career.

2. Why I choose to apply this scholarship because it helps to This is one of the lesser-known benefits of scholarships. When you are awarded a scholarship, you’ll be able to network with other people who have also won the award. As you’re likely to be in the same academic field, this can provide huge networking bonuses when you’ve graduated. For instance, if I win a scholarship in law, you’ll be able to stay in touch with sophomores and seniors who have also been given the award. When the time comes to get a job, you’ll already have contacts in the industry, which gives you a tremendous advantage over other candidates. Networking now can also grant you other academic opportunities, research opportunities, and give you a close-knit friendship group in your industry. Secondly, additional experience. Depending on who awards your scholarship, you may be required to carry out voluntary work in your industry. This is far from a burden: it gives you fantastic real-world experience that will improve your resume and help you in your career. Even if it isn’t mandatory, you should look for voluntary work to go along with your scholarship. This kind of industry experience is invaluable.

It is an education sponsorship awarded by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) to outstanding Malaysians who have high academic achievements and leadership capability to pursue undergraduate studies in oil and gas related fields. The sponsored program range from Accounting to Sociology, from Applied Chemistry to Instrumentation Engineering. I applied for law. It is a fully-funded scholarship which equally takes care of the students’ tuition fee, welfare and also accommodation. The main aim of the PESP is to develop the right talent that will ultimately contribute to the growth of the society and the nation.

After receiving my SPM result on 10 June 2021, I immediately applied for the PESP through its Online Application System at this website. From the sources online, I got to know that the shortlisted candidates would be invited to attend PETRONAS YoungStars Day (PYD) which aims at measuring the students’ potentials via series of assessments at the designated date and venue. However, due to the Movement Control Order imposed by the government because of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, PESP had to execute their PESP assessment activity.

All of the latest updates and announcement and invitation for PYD will be available at the website as well as through your email, so do check them from time to time!

Phase 1 Assessments which consist of Cambridge Personal Style Questionnaire (CPSQ)

Phase 2 Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA),

Phase 3 Assessment which is the Student Potential Assessment (SPA)

We were required to complete the CPSQ test within an hour anytime from. It is an online behavioral style assessment which will provide an insight into how you approach tasks and relate to others. Just be relax and don’t be stress during this assessment.

After a few days, I received an email from PESP informing me that I had been shortlisted to proceed to the Phase 2 of the PESP assessment! TSA is another assessment by Cambridge to test your ability in critical thinking and problem solving, skills which are really essential for success in higher education. Since it is a crucial test, online remote proctoring was carried out to ensure the integrity of the online assessment where each candidate needed to use a laptop/ desktop that is equipped with webcam. I remembered that this is my first time doing such this test.

Phase 3 assessment is a group interview session which was being conducted via Microsoft Teams. I attended my SPA session on for about 3 hours. Before the interview, I received an email with a link of Microsoft Teams to get into the virtual chatroom. During the interview, there were two interviewers as well as 4 candidates in my group. We started with a short briefing by the interviewers. Once the interview had started, each of us introduced ourselves. Then, the task was given. It was a group work. After that, we prepared and discussed the task in the group for 20 minutes. There will always be different ideas presented by each candidate, so we learnt to accept others’ opinions and eventually, presented our best ideas to the interviewers.

Before the session ended, we got the chance to share our last words.

REMEMBER! LUCK = PREPARATION + OPPORTUNITY

3. Ambition is important because their determination is what will shape our future. Ambition builds a student up and completes them into amazing human beings. We as college students need ambition, because without the desire to succeed, there is absolutely no way we can. Besides parents, college students have no one forcing them to do what they need to. Maybe some students have the thousands they are spending as their motivation to make good grades. There are some, who have that desire to live a better life then what they were raised around. Whatever may be the driving factor behind a student's ambition, all the roads lead to one end, and that is success.

Staying up until 3 a.m., saying no to your friends when you know you need to study, all the caffeine consumed in your body, all the times you have felt like quitting, every class you wanted to walk out of, all the stress you have experienced, every hour you spent in the library, even the thousands spent on tuition are nothing compared to the final result. The diploma is not the only result. Another result is that you know you can pass the difficult classes and you are an educated American. It is the pride you will have inside when you announce your job title to strangers and friends. It is a pride that cannot have a price tag, and is one you will have forever.

My ambition is I hope that I can obtain a good results when I was graduated and become a successful and responsible lawyer in the future. I hope that I am able to achieve it with my perseverance and determination in my life.
