What Can I Do During A Gap Year?

Planning to take a gap year but don’t know what to do during the period? Here are some suggestions on activities that you might be interested in. A friendly reminder that the activities stated below are only suggestions and there are a lot more activities you can do during a gap year.

1. Travel

Travelling has been the go-to for activities to do during a break, whether work or school. Travelling can also expand your worldview as you will be exposed to many new experiences, people, culture, beliefs and etc. Moreover, you will develop your eclectic tastes as you encounter different cultures and understand everything that makes them so wonderfully unique from one another. You will also build your confidence because travelling requires you to step out of your comfort zone and explore the world.

For those on a student budget, you don't have to go far! Sometimes going on a day trip to the neighbouring state could be more fun (and pocket-friendly) compared to a foreign island.

2. Work

Working has its own benefits. To begin with, it is a great way to get more experience in a potential career and decide if it’s a good fit for you. This experience can also make you more competitive in your field when searching for internships and jobs. Moreover, taking a gap year before you start college means that you can apply those skills to your degree and start reaping its benefits right away!

However, do be weary of scams on the Internet and do thorough research before applying for any jobs.

3. Volunteer

Volunteering might be a great choice for those who have intentions to give back to society. Through volunteering, you get to develop skills such as leadership, problem-solving and time management skills. Volunteering offers a great opportunity for students to explore and gain real-world experiences that I’m sure will be beneficial in life.

4. Sign up for online courses

As a high school graduate, signing up for online courses doesn’t require much time consumption as you will have unending flexibility and will be able to finish your assignments on time. Online courses mainly require a stable internet connection and an electronic device like your phone or laptop. Some of the advantages of signing up for online courses are you will have a more comfortable learning environment, lower total costs, scheduling flexibility and etc.

5. Figure out what you love

Figuring out what you love is important because you will be tempted to try everything that’s stated above but, the real question is ,”Do you have interest in all and are you capable of facing the challenges during your journey?” Well, the best way to deal with this question is to think about all the activities above and which one fits you best as we all have different personalities and goals. You can also list down why you think each activity is suitable and the challenges you have to face so, you will make a great and wise decision.
